Anthony Downing's family have released a statement, saying they'll treasure the memories and the achievements of his "fantastic life" and without him their lives are "diminshed"

A Squadron leader from RAF Kinloss has been named as one of two British servicemen, who died after an explosion in Afghanistan last week.

Anthony Downing was seriously wounded on December the 22nd when the vehicle he was travelling in was caught in a blast, south of Kabul.

29-year-old Royal Marine Captain Tom Jennings died at the scene - but Squadron Leader Downing was flown back to the UK for treatment.

It's been announced today, the 34-year-old died of his wounds in hospital in Birmingham. His family were at his bedside.

The Squadron leader served as Officer Commanding on the Nimrod Line Squadron at RAF Kinloss until May of last year, when the fleet was retired.

He was also a stalwart of the Mountain Rescue Team at the Moray base and an accomplished endurance athlete.

Group Captain Robbie Noel's paid tribute to an "immensely dedicated, talented and passionate engineer - who lead in the most honest and courageous fashion".
